A Thousand Little Cuts (2022)★★☆☆☆

So…I thought this would be a better movie than it was. As a thriller, it’s a two-star film. As a mystery and drama, maybe I could give it an extra star, but it’s not very thrilling, and as a “scary story” it’s barely two stars.

Honestly, I did care about Anne. And I do love Marina Sirtis as a counselor. But even aside from the lack of “thrill,” something about this movie felt…off. I had to really think through what that “something” was, and I’m pretty sure it’s a similar something to how I felt about Men.

This movie is about an experience many women have to deal with. A scary experience that’s often part of just being a woman in the world. And it’s not a terrible description of that experience…but it feels clear that it’s a description penned and directed by someone who isn’t a woman?

And I want to be clear that I’m not saying men have never been through this kind of experience, or that no man can ever possibly do a “great” job depicting a woman’s experience. But I am saying that this film and Men both share this distance from the experience depicted that, as a woman, I find hard to bridge.

So yeah, if you’re looking for a mystery that’s (SPOILER alert) about abusive relationships and the danger of a woman rejecting a man’s attention, you could probably do worse than this movie. But if you’re looking to be thrilled, you can skip this one.
