Animal (2014)★★★☆☆
I feel like it’s been a long time since I’ve mentioned and appreciated some understated opening credits, but that’s what immediately struck me about this movie. I liked the tense opening music and the old-school style font! I was also a little surprised to see Drew Barrymore’s name in the opening as an executive producer! So this movie got off to a good start.
…and unfortunately didn’t live up to that start. I mean, it wasn’t terrible or anything, but I was expecting better. Especially from Joey Lauren Adams and Keke Palmer!
The titular “animal” was pretty neat looking, but the story was pretty tired and the performances were middling. Stuff happens right away, but then it feels like the tension just fizzles for the rest of the movie. The deaths aren’t all that interesting and sometimes you’re just truly hoping for the next one already.
It’s not a bad watch, but I really wanted it to be better than it was. You can skip this one, or keep it on in the background while doing something else. Maybe watch the last ten minutes or so more closely…it’s kind of hilarious at the end. I’m pretty sure unintentionally so?
