Freaks of Nature (2015)★★☆☆☆

This is a horror comedy that’s neither horror nor comedy. Which is disappointing, as it has a lot of familiar comedic faces (Keegan-Michael Key! Patton Oswalt! Bob Odenkirk!) and some other great familiar faces as well. But it just doesn’t land anything.

Tonally, I think it makes sense. It’s not trying to do too many things at once, and it’s clear that it WANTS to be a horror comedy in the vein of, say, Cooties. It just doesn’t land it.

It also does that thing where it starts with a scene from later on in the movie, which so rarely feels necessary (and still doesn’t here). I kind of get why…there’s so little of interest here that a big fiery fight scene makes sense to draw viewers in, but…the rest of the film kind of lost me.

This certainly isn’t the worst film I’ve seen this year (or even this month!), and it’s not too long, but you can probably skip it. It’s boring, and there are better, funnier horror-comedies out there.
