Ginger Snaps (2000)★★★★☆
First, content and mild spoiler warning for early talk of suicide and some pretty gory imagery, especially for dog lovers.
Okay, so, apologies, this is another primarily nostalgia-driven rating. Why? Because I love Katharine Isabelle SO MUCH, and the scene where…well, where Ginger snaps, is so good.
The rest of this movie is a little rougher. And a little long (in the tooth? har har). Honestly, it takes WAY too long to make its point. And its point is pretty obvious from the start. Like, puberty is the REAL werewolf here! (Plus the tagline on the cover image is “they don’t call it the curse for nothing,” in case you weren’t picking up all the other obvious signs.)
I don’t know that it really pulls off delivering a message, though. Like, “puberty is the real werewolf” is all well and good, but they don’t do much with that point?
But I love Katharine Isabelle, and Emily Perkins was great, as was Mimi Rogers(!). I think Sam was my favorite character. This is overall a fun, funny movie that’s just a little slower than it needed to be, but it pulls itself together for the end.
