Hereditary (2018)★★★★☆
I don’t think I like this movie as much as Midsommar, but I still like it quite a bit. So it’s maybe a low four stars for me. It definitely feels as long as it is, but there’s a LOT packed into those two hours.
And a lot of it is genuinely traumatizing and terrifying, primarily because it’s depicting a traumatized and terrified family dealing with loss and grief (and you know how that gets to me). And the performances are just so good, it’s hard NOT to care about the family involved. Honestly, Toni Collette is just fantastic, and I’ve always liked Gabriel Byrne!
If Ari Aster knows how to do anything, it’s to pack every scene, every frame, with meaning both hidden and obvious. I think you could watch this movie several times and still miss some of the subtle parts.
In some ways, this movie was difficult for me to watch…but it is scary. If you haven’t seen it before, there will probably be a good amount that surprises you. There are a lot of spoilers out there on the internet, so I won’t add more, but…I recommend this if you’re into really dark and bleak horror movies.
