Hostel (2006)★★★★☆

Poster

This movie is Eli Roth, through and through. Well, mostly anyway. I wavered a little on how highly to rate this and decided if I didn’t give it at least four out of five, I’d be lying to myself.

Watching it again now I find this movie a bit less impressive but at the time it was an original. And it’s still not bad, if you’re into this kind of thing – just make sure you’re really into this kind of thing, or you’ll probably regret watching it.

I was a little surprised by how long had passed before the action really got started. Eli Roth isn’t generally one for subtlety, but many of this movie’s first scares come from events happening off-screen. Of course, once the action gets started it really gets started and it becomes clear that this is an Eli Roth movie.

I don’t have much more to say about this film except that it meets expectations. Which is more than I can say for a lot of other movies. If you’re an Eli Roth fan, this will be right up your alley.
