I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)★★★☆☆
Hello, July! I can’t believe six months of 2024 have already passed! I’m not sad to leave June’s movie picks behind me, though.
I’ll be honest, I’m feeling a little bad about the lower rating on this one. I was convinced nostalgia was going to give this one a boost! But I genuinely found this movie boring when I watched it today. I have zero memory of how much I liked it when I first saw it many many years ago, but it’s kind of a newer slasher classic, so I probably enjoyed it some?
Anyway, it’s SLOW. It’s slow to get started, slow to build up throughout, and only speeds up for the last five to ten minutes or so. Strike one, I guess.
Then there’s the overacting! Like, EVERYONE in this movie delivers way over-the-top performances, except for Jennifer Love Hewitt, whose performance was almost under-acted.
This film spawned a franchise and several parodies, so it’s probably worth a watch for historical context if you’ve never seen it before…but it definitely doesn’t hold up as well as I would’ve expected on rewatch. That may not bode too well for the sequels…
