Life (2017)★★★★☆
Ok, it’s really difficult to say…well, much of anything at all about this film, without spoiling it. So, I’ll start by saying I think this movie is really good, really tense and intense, and terrifying, and horrifying. And dark.
Everything else has spoilers ahead.
So, it’s great, good enough that I have rewatched this a couple of times, still at the edge of my seat each time, and yet…it feels hard to give five stars to a movie so bleak.
Seriously, for a movie called “Life,” it’s bleak. So bleak. And it knows how bleak it is - the juxtaposition of the promise of life in the middle schoolers at the beginning of the movie, or of Sho’s baby being born, with…everything else? The majestic, almost over-the-top score behind the first time you see Calvin? The bleakness is the point.
Because it’s not bleak for everyone, is it? Someone makes out great at the end of this. You know - life, uh…finds a way?
