Lovely, Dark, and Deep (2023)★★★★☆

Poster

I liked this movie! It was quiet, but not slow. Georgina Campbell (also excellent in Barbarian) was great, which is good because it’s just her we see through most of the film.

I’ll try not to spoil things here, because I think this is worth a watch. There were echoes of the stories of both Censor and Sweetheart in this, but it is wholly its own film.

There’s some interesting color usage throughout, and the camerawork was amazing.

Also, I don’t know how to explain it, but I felt like this movie got so much exposition done in a subtle, organic way. One small example is the clear passage of time based on the dates written on Lennon’s signs. This movie was very good at showing instead of telling.

And about the “telling”…if you aren’t big on unanswered questions, this might feel a bit unsatisfying. I felt like the right questions were answered, but there were certainly many more posed than answered, so maybe something to keep in mind.
