Men (2022)★★☆☆☆
What was I thinking this month? Did I pick a bunch of really boring movies, or am I just overly critical and critically bored this month? Either way, this movie isn’t it for me.
For positives, the performances are really excellent in this. I like Jessie Buckley, even though I’ve really only seen her in a bunch of weird, slow, mediocre things (Fingernails, I’m Thinking of Ending Things…this movie). And Rory Kinnear is amazing in all of his roles.
And yet…while I do understand the concept here, and while it can be absolutely terrifying to be a young woman alone, particularly in a small town in the middle of nowhere…I never felt like the terror quite landed. Sure, there are tense, scary moments. Sure, it becomes clear that something truly weird is going on…and sure, I was scared FOR Harper at moments.
But I couldn’t get into this movie, and by the time the vicar just kept talking and talking and talking, I was ready for it to be over already. And I was VERY ready to it have ended several minutes earlier by the time I got to the last scenes. Weird. Gross. Still a little boring. But not all that scary.
