Midsommar (2019)★★★★☆
Ok, I’m more torn on this movie than I have been in a while. But here’s the thing…it’s over two hours with just the theatrical cut, and even longer than It: Chapter Two with the director’s cut, and I’ve STILL watched it, by choice, at least three times.
So it’s clearly not just long and boring. But I still don’t really know what I feel about it overall?
It’s a beautiful movie. From the scenery to the costuming to even the poetry of the plot, there’s a lot of beauty here. And the plot is interesting! It starts out strong, builds some context and tension, and ends strong!
I find a lot about this film horrifying and sad, but not terrifying. It’s definitely a scary movie, but it’s a slow-burn kind of scare that probably won’t hit you until the very end (as opposed to a slow-burn kind of film where I can’t wait for the end).
If you haven’t already seen this movie, and you’re interested, I actually suggest starting with the theatrical cut. If you like it and you’re interested, watch the director’s cut second. There is some extra context and some added scenes in the director’s cut that do round things out a bit, but I think in a way that undercuts some of the horror of the story.
