Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016)★★★★☆

Okay, so I looked back at my rating for the original movie and now I feel like my rating system means nothing. “Pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it” with an “interesting” story and “believable” acting gets only three stars? LIN SHAYE only gets three stars? I thought I was MORE generous back in 2016 but it seems like I’ve just always been inconsistent.

Anyway, I definitely liked this one better than the original. Mike Flanagan will usually do that for me. This movie also had a stellar cast, many of whom are no strangers to Flanagan films (Kate Siegel, Henry Thomas, Annalise Basso, even Doug Jones), and some of whom I just really enjoyed (Lulu Wilson, Sam Anderson, Elizabeth Reaser - who WAS in a Flanagan TV series but it doesn’t look like other Flanagan films).

This film starts out as one thing and kind of morphs into another, but it does so pretty seamlessly and I found it all to be compelling and interesting. For a PG-13 film it was decently scary, and I liked the story.

I don’t know how true to the 1950s any of it is, but I liked the scenery, I liked the costuming, and I liked the creepy house. I just liked this movie!
