Scary Movie (2000)★★★☆☆

Poster

Okay, so, fair warning, I’m going to watch all five Scary Movies this week. I figure I did it for Scream, I might as well do it for this. I’ll probably regret it by the end of the week. I might already regret it now.

I have only vague memories of watching this around when it came out. I remember it was such a neat concept! It spawned a whole new parody genre (like Not Another Teen Movie and others of varying success)! It made fun of things I liked, which was supposed to be cool at the time!

But watching it now, it’s not really my kind of humor. At least not anymore? I mean, the parody elements are great. I love how over-the-top everyone is. Shannon Elizabeth is probably my favorite in this movie, but Cheri Oteri is a close second. I love all the pointed barbs and references to other films (and TV! there’s a Dawson’s Creek reference in there!).

But it’s mostly just “fine.” Because it’s a direct parody in a lot of ways, there’s no real tension or scare factor, and there’s not really supposed to be. There’s not a lot of original plot, even though the whole concept was something. But this movie definitely started something big (which had been kindled by Scream), so I think it’s important to include.

…and I did like super stoned Ghostface.
