The Good Son (1993)★★★★☆

I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve given a truly nostalgia-driven rating, but this might be it. I remember watching (and rewatching) this movie around when it came out, and being creeped out by Macaulay Culkin back then.

I think this didn’t get great critical reviews. I don’t think people really bought Macaulay Culkin’s creepiness like I did. But I’ve always liked him, and I’ve always liked Elijah Wood, and the two of them together in a thriller was something young me really appreciated.

And I still found it pretty creepy and entertaining! I also just learned that the screenplay was written by Ian McEwin (of Atonement fame, among other works)!

This would probably hit harder if I had kids (or who knows, maybe it would hit LESS hard?), but I still found it an impactful movie, and I still find creepy kids to be creepy, so I’d recommend this one pretty broadly. Especially to fans of Elijah Wood and Macaulay Culkin.
