The House That Jack Built (2018)★★★☆☆

Poster

Okay, I’m not at all sure why I put this on my calendar. It’s a two and a half hour film by Lars Von Trier, who also made Melancholia, the worst movie I have ever seen (which is saying something, especially for a film with Kirsten Dunst AND Kiefer Sutherland).

And it FEELS like a two and a half hour film by Lars Von Trier. At least with this one, I didn’t quite feel like I needed all my time back after watching it. It sort of had a point to it. In some places and in some ways it could even be viewed similarly to American Psycho.

But it’s LONG, and it’s a slog to get through. And it was hard to get past the shaky cam. It’s got some interesting moments, but they’re peppered with nonsensical scenes in between, and it takes so long to get from one interesting scene to another that it loses me for minutes upon minutes at a time.

It is very artsy. It is not the worst thing I’ve watched even this month. But it’s just okay. I do think Matt Dillon delivered a fantastic performance, but I don’t think he was quite enough to make this a great movie for me.
