The Rental (2020)★★★☆☆
I watched this because it had a title that kind of fit into a theme with yesterday’s movie…but I’m thinking this movie actually has more in common with The Open House, and not in a great way?
It’s a slow build-up to a somewhat rushed last act, with no real rhyme or reason to any of it.
I like Alison Brie a lot, and this movie not only has her in it, but was directed and co-written by her husband, Dave Franco, in his directorial debut.
I actually think the direction and writing were pretty good! I just don’t know how I feel about the pacing. The story itself isn’t terribly original, but that’s kind of par for the course with a lot of horror, so it doesn’t lose any points for that.
Overall, this is another run-of-the-mill scary movie, with some pretty faces. You could do worse than watching this, but you could also do better.
