The Witch (2015)★★★☆☆

Poster

I was excited to see this one finally available on Amazon Prime Video, but a little disappointed now that I’ve actually seen it.

The hype was definitely better than the movie on this one.

Which isn’t to say it’s a bad movie, because it’s not. It’s beautifully shot and wonderfully acted across the board. Everyone is believable and there are times you feel like you’re right there with the characters on screen.

That said, it’s a slow-moving film and the pacing combined with keeping most of the scary stuff off-screen (which can be used to terrifying effect, though not so much here) make it hard to tell at times this is even a horror movie.

I will give it credit for a masterful ending, though. The horror has built to its most climactic moment and Anya Taylor-Joy truly sells it. This movie was okay, but slow and not as scary as I wanted it to be. I guess I just wasn’t in the mood to let my imagination do most of the work tonight.
