Hatchet (2006)★★★☆☆
I like Adam Green. Frozen was a pretty good one, and there’s another one he did that I’m planning on watching soon that I remember liking…though that one features Ray Wise, so maybe that’s why I liked it. This one unfortunately wasn’t his best work. It’s another attempted parody that misses its mark. You don’t want a slasher film to be boring, and this one is pretty boring.
But the story is coherent and complete, some of the humor lands properly, and you get to see boobs. Mercedes McNab’s boobs, to be specific. And they’re not bad. But they are the best part of this movie. This is definitely another one best used as background noise.
Interestingly, I remember seeing a sequel to this…Hatchet 3, I think? And I remember liking that one a bit more – I think it was less parody and more horror which worked for it. Also it looks like that one wasn’t directed by Adam Green (though Hatchet 2 was).
Anyhow, I’m a little disappointed that I picked this one for Independence Day, but I was too lazy to watch something more relevant. The obvious choice might be this week’s Throwback Thursday though (but don’t quote me on that).
