Lisa Frankenstein (2024)★★★★☆
So, I’ve had some trouble with horror-comedy films this year. Several of them haven’t been great on either the horror OR the comedy side, and they’ve been kind of a slog to get through. I’m happy that this month seems to have redeemed the horror-comedy genre a bit for me.
This is written by Diablo Cody, and that’s definitely pretty clear early on. I think if you enjoyed Jennifer’s Body, you’ll probably enjoy this one.
It’s campy and silly, but it knows what it is and takes itself exactly as seriously as it should. I love the silly references throughout, especially the references that reach outside the 1980s!
I thought that Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse were great, and had surprisingly interesting chemistry given that Sprouse doesn’t actually have any lines until the very end.
It was nice seeing Carla Gugino again, along with Joe Chrest, who plays Ted Wheeler in Stranger Things and is therefore no stranger (har har) to the 80s setting.
Overall this was a fun ride that I think many will relate to. Especially kids of the late 80s and early 90s.
