Scary Stories (from a Dark Allie)

This was a weird little movie that I wasn’t sure about at first, but that won me over in the end. I think I might even recommend it quite broadly!

This was a silly horror movie that suffered from campy special effects and odd pacing choices. It could have been a lot better than it was!

This is a weird movie and I feel weird about it. I definitely was on the fence between three and four stars, but ultimately I think it’s more of a high three stars than a full four stars.

I don’t know what I was expecting out of this movie. Maybe I was expecting it to be closer, tonally, to Tusk. Maybe I was expecting it to be funnier.

A new day, a new December. And a new movie just in time to start your own advent calendar? I have complicated feelings about this one.

Oh hey, a Stephen King adaptation not by Mike Flanagan? Yep. I’ve actually read this story too, and mostly enjoyed it.

I usually like Eli Roth. Maybe this one was just longer and slower than I’d have liked. Maybe it was overhyped a bit too much when it was first released. Maybe I’m just in a bad mood and nothing was going to entertain me today. But I wanted to like this one more than I did.

Okay, so this is probably a weird choice for Thanksgiving, but it turns out there aren’t a whole lot of pre-1996 horror movies set on Thanksgiving? That I could find, anyway.

This is yet another film I remember enjoying more the first time around. (Spoiler alert) Honestly, maybe this year I’m just more sensitive to the dogs getting killed? I feel like I should have run my whole calendar through www.doesthedogdie.com before watching anything?

Okay, after a few movies in a row that I really liked (loved!), I’m back to a movie that was disappointing. This is another movie that was pretty hyped up for a while, so I was excited to finally get around to it…and was pretty disappointed.

Okay, yeah, I’m so glad I moved things around to watch this tonight after watching Trap last night. Good decision all around. It’s been too long since I’ve seen this movie, and I forgot how much I enjoyed it.

I was worried about this one, because it was wayyyyy hyped up, and that usually doesn’t bode well for a scary movie. But I love Josh Hartnett, especially in scary movies! I even moved some things around on the calendar just so I could watch him in another tomorrow…and I thought his performance in this was excellent. He definitely has the “extremely creepy facial expression” thing down pat.

I have admittedly little to say about this movie as well. That’s probably no surprise for a standalone “sequel” released 7 years after the previous in the franchise.
