Scream 2 (1997)★★★☆☆
Look, I don’t think anything was ever going to live up to the first movie, not even (especially not?) a sequel as self-aware as this one. And it doesn’t, but it’s fine.
Honestly, as soon as the opening scene started, I remembered most of this movie, which probably didn’t improve this viewing for me. But it’s fine. The movie, I mean. It’s just fine.
There are a LOT of familiar (to me, anyway) faces in this one. From the opening scene cameos to half the students at Sidney’s school, to Laurie Metcalf, there are a lot of familiar faces in this one.
But that’s about all it has. The follow up story isn’t super original, the ultimate reveal is kind of boring, and the musical score can be a bit overbearing at times, but I guess it’s fun to see the characters from the first movie again…and was probably even more fun just a year after the first came out!
(Semi-relatedly, I want to note that when I started this blog in 2016, my idea for “Throwback Thursdays” was anything over 20 years old, so the first Scream fit nicely into the end of that year for me. But now it’s been a whole 8 additional years, and I just can’t convince myself that anything made in the 21st century could be considered a “throwback” - like, what does that say about ME, if it could?? - so I’ve decided that I’m not changing the date range. “Throwback Thursdays” for the purposes of this site means 1996 or earlier.
…and also sometimes doesn’t mean “Thursday”.)
