Barricade (2012)★★★☆☆

Poster

(This whole review is basically spoilers…sorry?) It’s interesting that I picked this one immediately following yesterday’s movie, as it turned out to have a really similar twist. It was done a little better in this one, though not by much. This one did have Eric McCormack in it, though I’ve yet to decide whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

Joking aside, the cast was pretty good in this film. The kids were believable, and Eric McCormack actually pretty good as the father. Since much of this movie is about a family dealing with grief and loss, I’m glad to see they got the casting right.

But the movie was pretty confusing. It jumps back and forth in time pretty frequently. I know this is done partly to emphasize that the father is losing his mind but it was hard to follow. In fact, I’m not even sure I’m clear on what happened at the end of the movie. Are his kids actually alive? Is he under arrest?

The movie makes it clear that Terrance is an unreliable narrator, but it doesn’t make clear what the real narrative is, which is a bit annoying. I felt like I had to work just to follow along, but the payoff wasn’t really worth it. It was scary at times, and reasonably interesting throughout, but nothing special. Maybe a good movie to watch next time you’re stuck at home in a snowstorm.
